Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon

Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon

The Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon (AKL) is the standard work on art history for scholars, students, librarians, gallery owners, auctioneers, collectors and for all those interested in the world of art.

The print edition Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon has been published by K. G. Saur Verlag since 1991.

The database The Artists of the World Online is the world’s most contemporary and extensive reference work on artists, offering biographical information on more than 1 million artists.

From January 2010: More content - new platform

The database will be considerably enhanced and will contain full text biographies from A to Z plus a host of additional new features. The content will be continuously expanded and updated.

Starting 2010, the database can be accessed via Reference Global, De Gruyter's integrated platform for eBooks, eJournals and databases.

Starting 2010 a combined print + online annual subscription to the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon will also be available. Prices as of January 2010 are as follows:

Print + Online: Euro [D] 2,990.00 / for USA, Canada, Mexico US$ 4,186.00 (Annual Subscription)
Online: Euro [D] 2,490.00 / for USA, Canada, Mexico US$ 3,486.00 (Annual Subscription)
Print: Euro [D] 1395.00 / for USA, Canada, Mexico US$ 1,740.00 (calculation based on 5 vols. p.a. not including index vols.)

Starting January 2010 online prices will include access for an unlimited number of simultaneous users.

The Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon follows on from its predecessors, the standard art history works Thieme-Becker (published in 37 volumes from 1907 to 1950) and Vollmer (6 volumes, 1953-1962). In November 2009, volume 65 of the print edition will be published. Indexes by country and artistic occupation follow each ten volumes. The first volumes of the AKL were compiled from 1969 on. This period of almost four decades will now be covered in supplements.

Following the delivery of the 31st edition in December 2009, the CD-ROM edition will no longer be published.

The data from the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon can be purchased separately for integration in internal databases as authority files of artist's names.
